Marvin T. Jones: Executive Director
Marvin T. Jones is a documentary photographer and filmmaker. He is the owner of Marvin T. Jones and Associates, a visual communications firm specializing in corporate photography and videography. His love for his native Hertford County led to him to found Chowan Discovery. Jones attended the Winton Triangle’s greatest institution, the C.S. Brown School and graduated from nearby Ahoskie High School. In addition to the Triangle, he has documented communities in the Caribbean, South America and East Africa.
Marvin is a native of Cofield, a village in the Winton Triangle in North Carolina, He received his Bachelor in fine Arts from Columbia College of Chicago; While in Chicago, he was a medical photographer for the University of Illinois Medical Center and he free-lanced for institutions, businesses including the Chicago Defender newspaper. He realized while a college student that he was a competent documentary photographer and he pursued assignments as such. Upon arriving in Washington in 1976, Marvin set about building a clientele of businesses, institutions and government agencies.
It was during the years between trips to Haiti that he pondered over personal project ideas that he could carry out in DC and his native northeastern North Carolina. He began scanning photographs of hometown families in the late 90's which lead to founding the Chowan Discovery Group whose mission is to research, document, preserve and present the 432 year-old history of his home community which is along the Chowan River. Since its founding ten years ago, Chowan Discovery had given one hundred lectures, many articles and radio appearances, erected 7 North Carolina Highway Historical Markers, one stage production and received a state and a national award.
