Clarence Hickey

Country Doctor in the 1800’s - Dr. Stonestreet of Rockville

Rockville physician and Civil War surgeon Dr. Edward E. Stonestreet practiced medicine in Montgomery County for 51 years from 1852-1903. Clarence Hickey, a public historian and interpreter, will portray Stonestreet in a presentation sponsored by the Center for Lifelong Leaning (CLL), on Monday, Oct. 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the Clubhouse II auditorium.

Hickey will discuss Stonestreet’s background, medical education, service during the Civil War, 19th century medicine, and Civil War medicine and its effects on civilian medical practice. As a local physician, Stonestreet’s practice included house calls, office visits as physician and surgeon, and response to accidents and injuries. Stonestreet was educated at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and served as an Examining Surgeon for Montgomery County, MD, during the Federal draft of 1862.
