Mary Ann Jung

History Alive: Portraying Margaret Brent

Presented by: Mary Ann Jung

Who was Margaret Brent? She was a British Catholic who fled religious persecution and became the first woman to own land in America, its first female lawyer, and the first woman in America to demand the right to vote!

She lived from 1601 to 1671. Mary Ann Jung will portray Brent in a presentation sponsored by the Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in the Clubhouse II Auditorium.

Brent landed in St. Mary’s City, the Maryland Colony, the first place in history to be legally founded on religious freedom. Maryland had been established by her cousin Anne Arundel’s husband, Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore.

Come meet this unusual educated and outspoken woman and hear her amazing and lively account of helping the fledgling colony and the local natives.

Residents are asked to register for this CLL program beginning Tuesday, Nov. 11, by calling or visiting the Lifestyle office of either clubhouse. A $10 fee will be collected at the door and can be paid by cash or check payable to the Center for Lifelong Learning.
